GS Caltex tames Chung Kwan Jang’s firepower to take lead—KEPCO ends 4-game losing streak

Second-ranked GS Caltex extended its lead in the women’s volleyball standings.

GS Caltex swept Jeong Kwan-jang 3-0 (27-25 25-19 25-15) in three sets in their Dodram 2023-2024 V-League home match at Jangchung Gymnasium on Thursday. GS Caltex (17 points, 6 wins, 2 losses), who had their hopes dashed in their last match against bottom-ranked Pepper Savings Bank, maintained their second place and closed the gap on leader Heungkuk Life (20 points, 7 wins, 1 loss) with the win.

GS Caltex’s defense was good. Chung tried to add more firepower by inserting outside hitter Lee Sun-woo alongside Megawattie Putiwi and Giovanna Milana, but GS Caltex’s defense was more tenacious.

After tying the first set 22-22, it was the defense that turned the game around. At 26-25, Jia’s attack was saved by Han Soo-jin with a dig, and then Yoo Seo-yeon split the court with a quick opener to end the first set in a thrilling upset. After taking the first set, GS Caltex easily secured the victory. For GS Caltex, Giselle Silva exploded with 34 points, supported by Kang So-hwi with 12 points. Jia (17 points) and Mega (16 points) weren’t able to match the offense of Jung Kwan-jang.

In the men’s match at Suwon Gymnasium, KEPCO defeated OK Financial Group in straight sets, 3-0 (25-23 25-22 25-21). Tys Dul Host led the offense with 17 points, while Seo Jae-duk and Lim Sung-jin chipped in with 13 apiece.
