Madison is a two-man point race. In this event, athletes compete in 200 laps over a total distance of 50 kilometres, scoring points every 10 laps based on the order in which they finish. If you come in first, you get five points. Second place is worth 3 points, third place 2 points, fourth place 1 point, and so on. Crossing the finish line in first place on the final leg is worth 10 points. Shin Dong-in and Kim Yuro had accumulated 48 points by the 19th leg and seemed to have the gold medal in sight, ahead of second-placed Japan (44 points). However, Japan took 10 points for finishing first in the final leg, leaving Korea tied on six points. In the end, it was Japan who crossed the finish line first. Had they won, it would have been Korea’s first gold medal in cycling at the Hangzhou Asian Games, but they narrowly missed out on silver .South Korea had previously won silver in this event at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games (Park Sang-hoon and Kim Ok-chul).Kang Seo-joon (Busan Facilities Corporation) took silver in the men’s keirin event that followed. Kang finished second out of six in the men’s keirin final. He was 1.474 seconds slower than China’s Zhou Yu, who won gold, and 0.007 seconds faster than Malaysia’s Muhammad Sahrom, who took bronze. This is the first time South Korea has won a medal in the men’s keirin at an Asian Games since Doha 2006, when Kang Dong-jin won gold .It was also the first medal won by the Korean cycling team in an individual event at the Hangzhou Asian Games.Prior to the previous day, the women’s sprint team of Hwang Hyun-seo (Daegu Metropolitan City), Chosun Young (Sangju City), Kim Ha-eun (Naju City) and Lee Hye-jin (Seoul Metropolitan Government) had won a silver medal in the final against China.Na Na-rim (Samyang) and Lee Joo-mi (Korea Sports Promotion Agency) also competed in the women’s madison final on the 28th, but they finished third out of seven teams with 27 points to take home the bronze medal.
