If you come in first, you get five points. Second place is worth 3 points, third place 2 points, fourth place 1 point, and so on. Crossing the finish line in first place on the final leg is worth 10 points. Shin Dong-in and Kim Yuro had accumulated 48 points by the 19th leg and seemed to have the gold medal in sight, ahead of second-placed Japan (44 points). However, Japan took 10 points for finishing first in the final leg, leaving Korea tied on six points. In the end, it was Japan who crossed the finish line first.
