Seo Chae-hyun leads world championships with third-place finish.

South Korean women’s sport climbing powerhouse Seo Chae-hyun (19-The North Face Climbing Team-Seoul City Hall) won bronze in the lead event at the 2023 International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Championships.

Seo posted a 47+ in the women’s lead final on Sunday (July 7) in Bern, Switzerland, to finish third behind Ai Mori (JPN) and Janja Garnbrett (SLO), who finished side-by-side.

Seo, who tied for sixth in the semifinals with a 37 to earn a ticket to the nine-man final, posted a 47+ but finished with a bronze medal as Mori and Garnbrett finished ahead of her.

It was the second consecutive podium finish at the World Championships for Seo, who won gold in the lead event at the 2021 Games.

Her teammate, Kim Jain, shot a +32 in the semifinals and did not qualify for the final, finishing tied for 13th.

“For this competition, the most important task was to forget and overcome the big mistakes that I have been making this year,” Seo said through her agency, All That Sports. “I’m happy that I finished as well as I wanted to. I will do my best for the rest of the combine.”
