The Samsung Lions avenged an earlier loss with a dramatic ninth-inning victory.
Samsung completed a dramatic 7-6 comeback victory over KIA in the ninth game of the season at Pohang Baseball Stadium on Sunday, thanks to Ryu Ji-hyuk’s tying RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning and Kang Min-ho’s walk-off single.
Trailing 4-6 in the top of the ninth inning, Ryu Ji-hyuk’s tiebreaking two-run single in the bottom of the ninth against KIA closer Jung Hae-young and Kang Min-ho’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave Samsung its first win after losing four straight games in Pohang this season.
Trailing 3-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Samsung loaded the bases with no outs against the “lefty” Lee Jun-young after three lefties walked and hit consecutive singles. Pirela retired the side on an infield single, but pinch-hitter Kang Min-ho’s short outfield hit was followed by a daring home dash by third baseman Kim Hyun-joon to cut the deficit to one.
In the bottom of the ninth, the team brought in Oh Seung-hwan to close out the game, but two infield errors gave up another run.
But it wasn’t over until it was over. Trailing 4-6, Samsung had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth with a double by pinch-hitter Kim Dong-jin, a single by Kim Ho-jae, and a walk by Kim Ji-chan.
Kim Hyun-joon’s RBI single was thrown out at home by a sliding catch by KIA first baseman Kim Kyu-sung.
However, Ryu Ji-hyeok kept the spark alive with a dramatic tying RBI single, and then Kang Min-ho put the finishing touches on the thrilling comeback drama with a two-out single.
