KLPGA Rookie Yoo Hyun-jo predicts breakout year with first title and rookie of the year award

Hangzhou Asian Games women’s golf medalist Yoo Hyun-jo is turning professional.

Yoo won a silver medal in the women’s golf team event and a bronze medal in the individual event at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year. She then turned professional and finished third in the full member selection in October last year. After earning her full membership, she finished fifth in the KLPGA 2024 Regular Tour Seeding Qualifier, earning her a spot on the Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) Tour.

“I am very excited to be able to compete on the regular tour with my teammates from the national team,” Yoo said through the Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGT) on Tuesday. “I will do my best to win my first title and the rookie award. Please give me a lot of support.”

Hyunjo Yoo was first introduced to golf in kindergarten. He attended a preschool that had a kids golf program. It wasn’t until he was in the third grade that he decided to become a professional golfer.

“It was interesting because I could feel my golf skills getting slower and slower,” he recalls, adding, “I shot 113 in my first tournament as an amateur, but I practiced hard and even shot under par in the same tournament a year later.”

“From my sophomore year of middle school to my freshman year of high school, I had a tough time with drive-in’s,” he continued. In 2021, I had surgery for a knee injury, which I overcame by focusing on the small things one step at a time rather than thinking too much about it. After the surgery, I was able to gain momentum and achieve good results so far.”

Yoo’s weapon of choice is a powerful long hit. He already showed off a 260-yard long hit at the KB Financial Star Championships last year, where he competed as a 안전놀이터 featured player. He tied for 14th place among seniors.

“While watching the performance of my long-hitting rookie sisters last season, I thought a lot about whether I could stand next to them and be in the spotlight,” Yoo said, adding, “I am confident that I will showcase my cool and powerful shots based on my natural instincts and strong physical strength in the 2024 regular tour.

To prepare for her debut season, she also trained in California, USA.

“I think it’s important to be physically fit to play on the regular tour, so I’m focusing on physical fitness,” said Yoo. “I’m also going to sharpen my short game. I miss a lot of putts from short distances, so I’m going to focus on that part of my game.”

Meanwhile, the 2024 season of the KLPGA Tour will begin on March 7 with the Hana Financial Group Singapore Women’s Open at Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore over four days.
