Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia for three years, has reported its first win at Euro 2024 (2024 European Championship).

Ukraine defeated Slovakia 2-1 in the second Group E match of the tournament held at Düsseldorf Arena in Germany on the 21st.

Ukraine, which lost 0-3 to Romania in the first leg, became 1-1 and second in the group, expressing its hope of advancing to the round of 16.

Ukraine allowed Ivan Schrantz to score the first goal in the 17th minute of the first half. However, Mykola Shafarenko equalized in the 9th minute of the second half after receiving a pass from Oleksandr Zinchenko. Then, Roman Yaremchuk scored the come-from-behind winning goal in Shafarenko’s penetration pass in the 35th minute of the second half.

“Our players showed Ukraine’s mentality on the ground. They deserved to win,” Ukrainian coach Serhiy Levrov said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sent a congratulatory message on social media, saying, “This victory has shown that our country can overcome difficulties and raise its fist,” adding, “Let’s go further!”
