“Triple Double” from the opening game

Woori Bank, the women’s professional basketball “defending champion,” won the opening game of the 2023-2024 season against BNK on the 5th after an extended match. Woori Bank led Kim Dan-bi, who won the MVP of the regular league and championship game last season, to win the opening game with a triple-double.

Woori Bank beat BNK 74-70 in a home game held at Yi Sun-shin Gymnasium in Asan, Chungcheongnam-do, after a close game in overtime. Until the fourth quarter, the two teams faced each other 64-64 in overtime. The two teams were against last season’s championship game, and Woori Bank won the championship trophy with three consecutive wins, achieving an integrated championship following the regular league.

On this day, Kim Dan-bi recorded 32 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 assists. Kim Dan-bi, who achieved his seventh career triple-double in the regular league, beat Shin Jung-ja (retired, six times) to rise to second place in this category. Jeong Seon-min, the women’s national basketball team coach, has recorded eight triple-doubles as a player. Kim Dan-bi, who had recorded 498 total block shots before the game, added three more on the day to surpass 500. Lee Jong-ae, who retired after recording 862 total block shots, topped the list. Woori Bank also helped Park Ji-hyun win with a double-double performance of 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Woori Bank coach Wi Sung-woo said after the game, “I expected it to be a difficult game. The players who had been to the national team (during the Hangzhou Asian Games) did not look good, he said. “In the end, the power of veterans and seniors made a difference.”

BNK was left unfortunate as it lost concentration at the end of the game. In BNK, veteran forward Kim Han-byeol stepped down with five fouls 21 seconds into overtime, and since then, the victory has gradually tilted toward Woori Bank. BNK coach Park Jung-eun said, “The players’ inability to concentrate on the winning place led to defeat.”
