As UNITE-HERE’s Local 54 continues to battle the Taj Mahal for workers’ welfare, casino unions are planning a large protest tomorrow. Tomorrow, a “large civil disobedience” protest is planned, with 2,000 casino employees, community members and additional union members planning to take part in the protest.
According to local 54’s Ben Beglitter, the protest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the Taj Mahal along the boardwalk. Beglitter was asked what the term “large-scale civil disobedience” means in the announcement but has yet to comment on plans for the protest.
In October 2014, 24 people were arrested as part of a local 54 protest after individuals blocked traffic at an Atlantic City highway intersection. The protesters sat at the intersection and did not move as officers arrived at the scene and tried to remove them.
The Atlantic City Press says 60 protesters will be directly involved in civil disobedience. The protests have erupted for months in the region due to fighting between Carl Icahn and Atlantic City’s main casino labor union. Last year, 파워볼게임 1,100 workers got rid of health insurance and pension plans after Trump Entertainment Resorts cut health insurance and pension plans when a bankruptcy judge gave the green light.
Icahn exchanged $292 million in the company’s debt for ownership and plans to invest $100 million to keep the casino running after bankruptcy. Icahn is also the owner of the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City. In a positive sense for casino workers, the Atlantic City Council passed a resolution last week in support of workers’ efforts to restore benefits.
