The Macau government has ordered an immediate halt to all salvage operations at the Grand Lisboa Palace casino hotel under construction following the deadly accident that led to the weekend.

According to local reports, a construction worker on a fourth-floor terrace was hit and killed by a falling glass curtain wall at the site of Kotai Street on Friday. The employee was subsequently pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital, which prompted the residence’s Labor Secretariat to immediately issue an order to suspend all lifting operations until it could conduct a review of safety standards and issue new guidelines.

The Bureau of Labor explained that it expected to receive full reports of the incident from current casino operator SJM Holdings Limited and its building contractor, but did not specify what could happen once the review is conducted.

Ambrose So Shu Fai, CEO of SJM Holdings Limited, told GGRAsia he expects to open the $3.9 billion Grand Lisboa Palace in 2018 after completing construction by the end of next year. The completed site is expected to offer around 2,000 rooms, and Angela Long On Kei, the operator’s executive director, recently revealed that VIP play will be an important feature of future operations.

This Grand Lisboa Palace, formerly known as Lisboa Palace Cotai, should not be confused with the nearby Grand Lisboa Casino and Hotel.
